I heard someone say something years ago that I have seen to be so true: God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.
Need evidence? Look at all that God has done (and is doing) in and through you. We weren’t much when God called us, but we are much for Him when we stay humble and hungry. Need more evidence? Look at Jesus’ first circle of followers.
I once saw a fictional memo sent to Jesus from a Jerusalem Job Placement service that did an assessment on his “staff” team:
Simon Peter is emotionally unstable and given to putting his foot in his mouth. Andrew has no qualities of leadership. The two brothers, James and John, sons of Zebedee, have some anger issues (we’re told they are privately called ‘the sons of thunder’) and always want to have the best seats. Thomas demonstrates a questioning attitude that would tend to undermine morale. We feel it our duty to tell you that Matthew has been blacklisted by the Greater Jerusalem Better Business Bureau. James, the son of Alphaeus, and particularly Simon the Zealot have radical leanings, and they both registered a high score on the manic-depressive scale. Thaddeus is definitely sensitive, but he wants to make everyone happy.
One of the candidates, however, saw great potential. He is a man of ability and resourcefulness, has a keen business mind, and has contacts in high places. He is highly motivated, ambitious, and responsible. We recommend Judas Iscariot as your controller and right-hand man.
So if that’s the back story of the guys who followed Jesus, you have no reason to feel less than…or unqualified! Remember this the next time Satan tempts you to believe you’re not smart enough, talented enough or ______ enough (you fill in the blank)! Just speak this truth back to that ancient deceiver – God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called! Get thee behind me!
